The Heart of Tibet Lhasa
- Lhasa, the capital city, is the spiritual and cultural heart of Tibet. It is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Norbulingka.
- Potala Palace, once the winter residence of the Dalai Lama, now stands as a majestic museum overlooking the city.
- Jokhang Temple, built in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo, houses sacred statues of Lord Buddha brought by his Nepalese and Chinese queens. It lies at the center of the lively Barkhor Square, surrounded by pilgrims, prayer wheels, and traditional shops.
- Norbulingka, the former summer residence of the Dalai Lama, is surrounded by serene gardens and ponds, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustling city.
Lhasa is also known for its three great monasteries, Drepung, Ganden, and Sera, renowned centers of Buddhist learning. Just outside the city lies the breathtaking Yamdrok Tso, a turquoise lake shimmering amidst brown hills, considered one of the most beautiful lakes in Tibet.
Historic Cities and Monasteries
Travel west to Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city, home to the magnificent Tashilhunpo Monastery, the seat of the Panchen Lama. Nearby lies Gyantse, once a major trade hub connecting Tibet with Nepal, India, and China. Visitors can explore the ancient Gyantse Kumbum, Pelkor Choede Monastery, and the historic Gyantse Dzong, all showcasing Tibet’s deep spiritual heritage.
The Sacred Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar
In western Tibet lie two of the holiest sites on Earth: Mount Kailash (6,741 m) and Lake Manasarovar. Mount Kailash is considered the center of the universe and revered by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers alike. Hindus believe it to be the abode of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, while Buddhists associate it with the saint Milarepa. For Jains, it is where their first teacher attained enlightenment, and for Bons, it is a heavenly place where their founder descended to Earth.
The journey to Mount Kailash takes about four days by jeep from Lhasa or a week-long trek from Simikot, Nepal. The highlight is the 53 km “Kora” a sacred circumambulation around the mountain that takes three days, starting from Darchen near Lake Manasarovar. Along the route, travelers witness awe-inspiring mountain landscapes, nomadic herders, and the spiritual essence of the Tibetan plateau a true journey of the soul.
